A Good vs a Bad Client

As a freelancer, I’ve connected with amazing clients in places you’d expect to be shady (like Craigslist). I’ve also met shady clients through avenues you’d expect to be safe and positive (like referrals). So how do you tell a great client from one you should avoid?

None of the following tactics are foolproof, but here are some pointers that might help you differentiate between good clients and bad clients—while avoiding scammers outright:

Google the company. Do they have positive reviews on places like Glassdoor or G2?

If you met the client on Upwork, read past reviews of the client from other freelancers.

Get on the phone with new prospects before you agree to any work. Ask questions about their company and product. Do they come across as secretive, uninterested, or impatient? They might not make a good client.

Ask about their expectations/vision for the project. Do they expect everything to be done yesterday and keep asking you to cut your prices? Those are good signs of a client who doesn’t trust you or your process.

Are you straining to convince the client of your value? It’s probably not worth your time. If someone doesn’t respect your services, then it’s best to move along instead of trying to prove yourself. There are people who’ll happily pay your fees to access your solution. You’re better off preaching to the already converted.

Once you find a client who needs your services and is ready to work with you, it’s time
